Venado Caves
Take a trip to explore the depths of the Venado Caves, located about 45 minutes away from La Fortuna, San Carlos.
The caves were formed during the Miocene period, 15 or 20 million years ago. For many years they remained under sea level and surfaced due to tectonic plate movement. Years later, the Guatusos aborigines discover this place. Today you can explore the wonders hidden in this underground landscape as well.
Limestone rocks, stalactites, stalagmites, and corals form most of the rocky halls and tunnels you will walk along. The length of the tour into the caves is 1 ½ hour. During this time, we will run across marine fossils, bats, spiders, and crickets. Besides, an underground stream that continually shapes the whimsical stone formations will be another significant part of your adventure. Put to the test your resolve for crawling into tight spaces at the optional passage called “the birth.”
As you travel along different halls and chambers, a prepared guide will share several facts about the caves; you’ll find this experience fascinating from the history to its unique landscapes.
Additional information
Because we will have to walk through the stream from the upper part of the cave, we recommend our customers to take light clothes, hiking shoes, and extra clothes.
We’ll give you specialized equipment at the facilities, which includes a lantern, a helmet and a pair of boots to enter the caverns.
